Marion Township Fire Chief Ben Meddles presented Drew Medley and Joshua Hoskins with a Citizens Life Saving Award for their actions on May 11, 2017 at 1070 N. Main Street.

Upon seeing flames coming from the front porch of the home. Mr. Medley and Mr. Hoskins ran to alert the residents inside the home of the fire. These civilians ran across the street from Wyandot Popcorn and entered the home through the back door to alert the residents getting them safely out.

Surveillance video shows several vehicles driving past the structure fire and it was not until after Mr. Medley and Mr. Hoskins quick actions was there a 911 call made to Marion County Dispatch.

Chief Meddles strongly feels the actions of these two individuals was directly related to the safe evacuation of those inside and ultimately saved their lives.

Marion Township strongly encourages all homes to have working smoke alarms on each level of the residence.

Need A Smoke Detector?

Marion Township Fire Department has smoke alarms available to township residents. These alarms are equipped with 10 year lithium ion batteries meaning the batteries do not have to be changed for the life of the alarm.

The catch to getting one of these life saving devices is you must be resident of Marion Township and we will come install the alarm for you. This allows the fire department to ensure the alarm is properly placed and operating and not sitting in the box on your kitchen counter.

If you are a resident of Marion Township and would like to have the MTFD come to your home and install one of these alarms please call 740-387-5404 or complete the email form below please include your address in the message.

Only use Federally approved (FMVSS213) car seats!

Buyer beware! There is a product being marketed online as a car seat but it is not designed for crashworthiness. Looking at the product website, it does not meet FMVSS 213-- a requirement in the U.S.

Recently, Britax crash tested the product and results were terrifying. In a 30-mph crash, the seat came apart, offering no protection to the crash test dummy occupant.

There are similar looking restraints that are FMVSS 213-approved, like the RideSafer Travel Vest, IMMI Go and several at They are clearly labeled that they meet U.S. federal standards.
